Michael Agerter was born on 26 July 1985 in Valparaiso, Indiana, the oldest of four children. In 2002, when he was 17, the family moved to Urbana, Ohio, where his father coached high school football and Michael played for the team. He spent a year at Ohio State, then went to work, first for First Ohio Mortgage and later for Chase. In 2010, aged 25, he applied for a job with Wells Fargo's mortgage department in Phoenix, Arizona, packed his car and drove west. A friend from Ohio, Chris Grindy, moved out within a year and the two men shared an apartment in Tempe.
In 2013 Michael joined a dating app, hoping to find a girlfriend. They went skydiving on one of their first dates, and after a few months he took her to Ohio to meet his family. She moved into the Tempe apartment, bought him a small dog called Darwin and, with his help, moved from call-centre work into insurance and later mortgages.
The relationship soured. In 2016 she became pregnant. Michael was happy about the baby but wanted out of the relationship, so he asked Chris to help him escape and rented a house in Maricopa, on the 43,700 block of West Sagebrush Trail. She hired a private investigator to find him, turned up at the house and lured Darwin away through the dog door. Michael obtained a restraining order and, with his landlord's permission, installed security cameras around the house.
Their son was born in August 2016. Michael had not seen him and petitioned the court for visitation. On 16 December 2016 Michael took a half-day from work for the test. Shortly after 2 p.m. he was on the phone, through his car's Bluetooth, with his sister Marley as he pulled into his garage. He said 'holy shit' and Marley heard three gunshots before the line went quiet.
Neighbours had heard the shots and called police. Officers found the garage door open, Michael's Lexus still running and Michael dead in the driver's seat, with a gunshot wound to the head and others to his neck and torso. Three casings were recovered; the weapon, apparently a nine-millimetre, was never found. The house had not been ransacked. Footage from Michael's cameras showed a small figure in a dark hoodie, dark trousers and gloves, carrying papers and a shoulder bag, run to the garage and return to a white van eleven seconds later.
Witnesses saw a white van parked across the street and leaving after the shots, but descriptions of the driver ranged from a black man to a Hispanic woman to a white woman. She owned a grey-blue Mitsubishi Mirage, not a van, but police found her in Mesa at the home of her co-worker Bridget, whose white Chrysler Town & Country matched the footage. Both women said they had been at work all day. Her work computer showed searches for how to make a phone untraceable.
Her car held two stolen licence plates, a bin of clothes and two hoodies with gunshot residue; residue was also found in the van.
DNA confirmed Michael was the father. A co-worker, Jared Cook, testified that she often said life would be easier without Michael and that she left work for a couple of hours on 16 December, returning quiet and solemn. The prosecution argued she waved paternity papers at Michael before shooting him. Michael's son was raised by Michael's parents in Urbana, Ohio.
