“Accurately nicknamed the friendly city, a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family; the reviewer was born and raised there, has travelled the world and still looks forward to coming home; the crime rate is low, though the nightlife is not as plentiful as in bigger cities.”

“Not a terrible town; there is a zoo, a casino and golf courses near and around, plus boating and hiking, but be careful buying on Wheeling Island because it is prone to flooding in rainy seasons.”
about 0:10:45

“There is not a lot to do and it is quite boring; the only thing to do is go to someone else's house, the streets are so empty you can see tumbleweeds; the reviewer has met good people but plans to move away.”

The story

Wheeling, West Virginia, sits in the northern panhandle of the state, about an hour from Pittsburgh and two hours from Columbus, Ohio. The name comes, according to the theory James reads out, from a Lanape phrase meaning place of the head or place of the skull. A severed head, belonging either to a Native American prisoner or to a white settler, was displayed on a pike at the confluence of Wheeling Creek and the Ohio River. The town peaked in population in 1930 and has declined for a hundred years since. Big houses went up on Wheeling Island while factory workers and miners lived in slums. An ordinance regulated personal cess pools and banned pipe connections between homes unless offensive smells were properly tracked. The Depression and the Second World War restructured industry, and afterwards there were far fewer jobs. At the time of the episode Wheeling had 27,142 people and a median age of about 43. The population was 90 per cent white, 5.9 per cent black, 0.9 per cent Asian and 1.1 per cent Hispanic. Forty-two per cent were religious, with Catholics the largest group, a legacy of the Italian and Polish miners. Unemployment was almost 7 per cent, nearly twice the national average. Median household income was $43,483, about $25,000 below the national average. The cost of living index was 76 against a national 100, the median home cost $131,400, and a two-bedroom rental averaged $980 a month. Property crime was about average, while violent crime was more than double the national average.

His adult record began days after his eighteenth birthday in April 2003, with three counts of theft.

Trevor Vossin was born in 1991, had a son called Landon, and was the boyfriend of Lauren Cree Jenkins, known as Lulu. Lulu was born in 1990, was from Wheeling, and was five months pregnant with Trevor's child. On 3 August 2018 the pair were reported missing by their families.

He told his girlfriend Dana Marie Bowman, who had a house on Wheeling Island, that he was going to bring people there. He lured Trevor and Lulu to the house. She heard three shots, though four shell casings were later found. She went to the front of the house to compose herself. He killed him and dragged the body to the basement.

Bowman went to bed expecting to be killed in the night. He put the bodies in large white plastic bags and took them away. The house was covered in blood on several floors. He took the bodies to an abandoned house in southern West Virginia, where a neighbour saw a man with distinctive face tattoos burning material on a concrete pad and called the police. The burn pile held bones, saw blades and shell casings, along with a black bag carrying both victims' fingerprints and pieces of a blue moving blanket.

Two days later he loaded the remains into white plastic bags in a borrowed Jeep Liberty, belonging to Holly Mills, the wife of his best friend, and drove south. A toll booth camera between Charleston and Beckley filmed him with a large bulging plastic bag on the back seat. He drove the remains to Sullivan Road near Coal City, in the far south of the state, and dumped them.

On 14 August 2018 Jeffrey Browning, looking for firewood, found the burned and chopped remains of two people beside Sullivan Road near Coal City. The West Virginia Medical Examiner's Office and the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office investigated. Trevor's glasses were at the site. Trevor's white two-door 2002 Honda Accord, West Virginia plate 73K 986, was never found.

Meanwhile Bowman had been cleaning. She replaced the kitchen flooring, burned the old boards and other items, repainted the walls and filled the bullet holes, then threw some boards into a ravine in front of the house. Police found burn material behind the house on South Euron Street but thought nothing had happened inside because it had been so thoroughly cleaned. Cadaver dogs indicated a spot on a cabinet. Luminol found blood on the lower cabinet and doors, and another spot between a pipe going to the basement, which they thought was Lulu's blood. Bowman then told the police what she had seen.

They took about $6,000 from the register and the safe, tied Cobb up with zip ties and duct tape and left.

She gave a recorded statement. He told a third party he needed to keep in contact with his bitch to stop her testifying, arranged three-way calls, said he could be anything she wanted if she was loyal, and that the devil would use her to get to him because he was too powerful. The judge kept him on the case.

The prosecutor said he would probably never be free.

The second case took the show to Panther, an unincorporated community in McDowell County in the far south of West Virginia, in 1948. On 6 November a family quarrel turned into a gunfight at the Panther Bridge over the Tug River. The Whit brothers were seen with two shotguns in their car. Thomas told Herbert Brunty that they might have to kill old Mat before it was over.

At about four in the afternoon the Whit brothers parked near the southern end of the Panther Bridge and waited. The s got out with .38 pistols. Both Whit brothers died. Witnesses gave wildly different accounts of who was holding what.
