In 1977 Wendell was killed at 17 when the truck he was driving crashed on Route 441 in Conway Township.
By 1978 the marriage was failing. On 4 November 1979 they separated and he moved to a trailer on Donnerville Road.

At 8.52am Wesley reported her missing; at 4.20pm the farmer Roy R. Nissley found the car in his standing corn. The autopsy found one fatal bullet through her left arm, lung, pulmonary artery, heart and right lung, extensive blunt injuries and a human bite mark on her left arm. A second bullet was found in her clothing. Death was put between 5am and 10am, with no robbery and no sexual assault.

The defence argued duress and pointed to his IQ of 91.
His father Cyrus died the day before. Barbara, 40 and a week short of her birthday, is buried at the Masonville Mennonite Cemetery.
