Elizabeth Marriott, known as Lizzie, was 19 in the autumn of 2012 and in her sophomore year at the University of New Hampshire, studying marine biology. She had grown up in Massachusetts, loved turtles and other small creatures, and worked at a Target store near the campus. She lived with an aunt and uncle close to the university; her parents, Bob and Melissa Marriott, stayed in Massachusetts.
On Tuesday 9 October 2012 she planned to attend a laboratory class that ended at nine and then visit a new friend from Target. At 8.55 p.m. she texted a friend to say where she was going and told her aunt and uncle she would be home by midnight or half past. She left her 2001 Mazda Tribute in a student lot on campus.
They had met in the summer of 2011 through the local theatre scene and appeared together that July in a play called Last Rites.
While Lizzie sat on the floor watching the film, he put on black gloves behind her, pulled a rope over her neck and strangled her.
Roberta and her boyfriend Paul Hickok arrived shortly after 11 p.m. and found Lizzie's body on the floor beside the bed. Roberta cut a plastic bag from Lizzie's face with a box cutter and saw that she was blue. The couple left without calling 911.
They carried her, wrapped in a tarp and stuffed in a suitcase, to an overlook and pushed her over the cliff; she fell 35 feet onto rocks at low tide. They left the car at the university and walked six miles home.
On Thursday 11 October, after two nights without word, the family reported Lizzie missing. Her car was found on the campus and secured as evidence. Police found men's underwear, black gloves and Lizzie's sweatshirt in a dumpster behind the apartment, but her body was never recovered.
