“Sarasota has it all: every store and restaurant you could imagine, beautiful parks and beaches, lots of walking paths and the Legacy Trail to Venice, good for biking; the only complaints are traffic and awful public schools.”about 0:10:57
“Overpopulated by people moving in mostly from the Northeast; traffic crashes nonstop, schools are overcrowded, crime is growing, homeless people everywhere, new unaffordable neighbourhoods going up and infrastructure not keeping up, beaches impossible at weekends; a lifelong resident takes beach holidays elsewhere and hopes to sell to a fool from New York.”about 0:11:43
“A Boston transplant says do not move to Florida: rude people, everyone has two jobs, crazy drivers, beyond expensive, poor pay, high rent, constant chain restaurants and weird people, Twilight Zone weird.”about 0:12:50
In 1996 Nancy Campbell, a widow from Michigan who had raised two sons on her own, was introduced by friends to AOL chat rooms. They talked online for about a year, and in 1997 he flew to the United States and married her almost at once.
The marriage was volatile from the start. Court records show a pattern of injunctions filed and withdrawn, of separations and reconciliations. On 25 July 1998 she filed an injunction against him.
He told Eleanor that Nancy was stalking them and that they needed to confront her. Instead of a mediator, they took the dispute to The Jerry Springer Show, which taped an episode titled Secret Mistresses Confronted on 7 May 2000, Nancy's 48th birthday.
She did not know he had married Eleanor. Nancy learned from the audience reaction that she was the mistress, not Eleanor. Nancy said, "That's fine, bye," and walked off. Backstage, producers told her that if she did not go back out she would not get her return ticket. She refused, and the show put her out on the streets of Chicago with her suitcase, no hotel, no money and no flight. A stranger who saw her distress bought her a Greyhound ticket to Sarasota.
When a deputy went to serve it, Eleanor produced a conflicting injunction from Manatee County and the sheriff left, unable to decide who had the right to be there.
On the morning of 24 July 2000 Nancy was in court. He then went to a bar, where the Jerry Springer episode was airing that afternoon, and drank heavily as he watched it, at one point telling a stranger, "I'm going to kill her." His nephew Marcus and Eleanor came and went, clearing belongings from the house.
He threw himself on the bed in the master bedroom, then climbed out of a window when police arrived and told the others to meet him at a 7-Eleven. Eleanor later said that she found him running down the street in a daze and picked him up. Marcus, meanwhile, ran to a neighbour, Ron Shin, saying his uncle was drunk and killing his ex-wife and himself. Shin found the front door barricaded from inside and called 911. Neighbours reported a man and a woman fighting, a woman screaming "don't do this", and Eleanor standing in the street screaming towards the house, looking as though she had seen a ghost.
Police arrived at about 7.30 p.m. and broke in at 7.35. Nancy Campbell was on the floor in a pool of blood, strangled and beaten beyond recognition. Her facial bones had been separated from her skull, there were shoe prints in the blood on the kitchen floor and on her face, and the tread carried a Skechers logo. A first-degree murder warrant was issued and Eleanor was wanted as a material witness. They flew from Maine to Florida and surrendered, and were held without bail.
She was given immunity in exchange for answering detectives' questions. She said she saw no blood on her husband and could not imagine he had killed Nancy.
His defence was led by Jeffrey Fieger, the Michigan lawyer known for representing Dr Kevorkian and for suing the Jenny Jones show.
Nancy's sons Gary and Jeffrey and her sister asked for life. He also criticised Jerry Springer and his producers for manipulating the trio to increase their humiliation, asking whether ratings were more important than the dignity of human life. The show issued a statement denying responsibility, noting that the murder happened nearly three months after the taping, on the day it aired.
