Grasshopper Junction is a dot in the desert of Mohave County in north-western Arizona, west of Kingman on the road towards Las Vegas and the California line. At the time of the episode it has no population at all. Between 1988 and 1991 the official count was six, all of them one family, though in reality only two people lived there. They were Dean Reginald Morrison, born on July 23, 1925 in Michigan and a Navy veteran of the Second World War, and his partner Jacqueline Louise Corsaut Applehans, born on November 5, 1930 in Santa Ana, California. The couple had four grown children between them, all moved away by 1991. They ran the Grasshopper Junction store and restaurant, lived on the site and owned a towing business called Dean's Enterprises, which gave them a tow truck.
The killers were brothers from Mount Hope, Alabama. Their childhood was violent. At 13 he brought a gun to school and said he could blow his teachers' brains out. A detention home counsellor called him a time bomb waiting to go off, and a court psychologist feared he and society would be at odds. At 14 he vandalised a cemetery and was sent to the Alabama Department of Youth Services. In 1984 a psychologist found a conduct disorder, and Dr Potts diagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and antisocial personality disorder.
On April 30, 1991, at about nine at night, the brothers entered the Mount Hope home of a 78-year-old woman. They tied her up, beat her and ransacked the house, then left her alive. The brothers fled Alabama and headed west.
In Las Vegas they spent the night and bought a 12-gauge shotgun for cash. On May 12 they checked into the Holiday House Motel in Kingman, registering their 1988 white Ford Tempo with Alabama plates. They checked out on May 13 and drank at the Temple Bar from nine to ten that evening. They are thought to have reached Grasshopper Junction after midnight.
On the morning of May 14 a state worker found Dean's tow truck abandoned on the westbound I-40 near Kingman. About eight o'clock a Department of Public Safety officer near Holbrook ran the plates of the Tempo and found the owner wanted for armed robbery. The car ran, reached 85 miles an hour, crashed through a roadblock and went into the desert, where the brothers threw a 38 revolver and a loaded 25 out of the window before getting stuck in a wash and giving up.
Between 8.30 and nine, Laverne Redunes came for his morning coffee, found the restaurant door open and money on the ground, then saw blood and bodies in the house and drove off to call police. Dean and Jackie were face down in the living room in their bathrobes, shot repeatedly in the head with 38, 22 and shotgun. Jackie's hand was clutching Dean's arm. The house and store had been ransacked. In the brothers' car police found a checkered cushion cover, coin rolls stamped Dean's Enterprises, about $1,400 in coins and $3,300 in cash, gloves, a motel receipt, keys to Dean's pickup, a police scanner, a hacksaw and the sawed-off shotgun. Their clothes carried the victims' blood, and the footwear matched footprints of tennis shoes and cowboy boots at the scene.
A possible defence witness, Anthony, who claimed to have seen a blue car and Dean with three other men, was never called. Dean is buried in Cass City, Michigan.
