Joshua Ford, 32, was an Army veteran from South Boston and an insurance underwriter. They met at a company Christmas party in Boston in December 1999 and moved in together in Fairfax County, Virginia, in April 2001.
A gifted basketball player, she won a scholarship to Mary Washington College in Virginia and graduated cum laude, but was anxious and obsessive.
They married within three weeks of meeting in Fredericksburg at the Silver Bell Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, without telling either family. After a bad conduct discharge from the Navy in 2000 they moved to Altoona, opened a scrapbook shop called Memory Lane, collected Hooters memorabilia, kept snakes named Hitler and HIV, acquired a swastika tattoo on BJ's chest and became addicted to Xanax, Valium, ecstasy and cocaine.
On 25 May 2002 they checked into a penthouse at the Rainbow Condominiums, ate at Hooters and at 9 p.m. took a bus to Secrets, where they met Josh and Jeannie. The four drank until 2 a.m.; BJ vomited, was caught picking the ATM lock and was thrown out.
BJ produced a gun, made the couple strip and demanded the purse. BJ shot through the door, hit Josh in the shoulder, kicked it in and shot him in the head. BJ had hidden the purse under the bed. He asked her to photograph him holding both heads. They drove 30 miles into Delaware and left the parts in a dumpster behind a grocery store.
The next day they bought cleaning supplies and a replacement bathroom door at Home Depot, and BJ scrubbed the bathroom and patched the bullet hole. On 29 May they lured Todd Wright and Melissa Sealing to the penthouse and staged the missing purse, but the pair escaped. Just after midnight on 31 May a silent alarm at the Hooters on 123rd Street brought police, who found them loading merchandise into a Jeep Cherokee. Her purse held the victims' licences and a bloodstained ring; a sergeant recognised the missing persons flyer.
The penthouse search found bullets, drug residue and the victims' photographs on the coffee table, and blood and tissue throughout the bathroom, including scalp in the sink drain. A landfill dig in Delaware on 3 June found Jeannie's leg and Josh's torso and arms; the heads were never recovered. She accepted a deal to testify but admitted before the polygraph that she told BJ to kill them, and the deal was withdrawn.
