Devin Guzman, born on 15 June 1981 in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, was 19 in the summer of 2000, working as a cleaner and living with her girlfriend Carrie Ann Renner at the Mineral Springs Hotel in Forks Township, Pennsylvania. Carrie, 20, was married to a soldier away at boot camp.
The two fought, and Devin hit Carrie on the back of the head with a half-full bottle of vodka. Shortly after 11.30 p.m. Carrie and Devin drove to the house on West Joseph Street.
There they found Devin's grey car, with Devin curled in the back seat under a green jacket, her lips and eyebrows purple.
The coroner arrived at 1.13 p.m. Devin had a four-inch laceration across her throat reaching almost to the spine, cutting her tongue and severing the right carotid artery and jugular vein. The death was ruled a homicide by asphyxiation and severe neck injury. There was almost no blood in the car, the body had been dragged, a knife in her hand had been placed there and an uncapped syringe was tucked into her waistband: the scene had been staged, by more than one person.
Prosecutors considered the death penalty but settled on life. In August 2001 Devin's body was exhumed for dental impressions; the state's odontologist found the bite mark most consistent with Devin's own teeth. The prosecution argued that two people were needed to drive both cars.
Devin's parents sued for wrongful death in 2003. Her attempt to use Miller v. Devin is buried at Northampton Memorial Shrine in Palmer Township.
