These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Aberdeen is in Brown County, in north-eastern South Dakota, and about 28,000 people live there. The land was Teton Sioux country before the fur traders came through in the 1820s. The first European settlers arrived as a party of four, with three horses, two mules, 15 cattle and two wagons, and spent their first winter there alone, waiting for the rest to turn up in the spring. The town grew into a regional centre, and it has been one ever since.
Its place on this list rests on one episode, 335, which carries two killings fourteen years apart. The first came in May 1985, a little west of town, on a ranch where a nineteen-year-old lived with his mother. The second came in 1999. The two killings have little in common beyond the county.
Aberdeen lands at 199 overall and third in South Dakota, which is the sort of ranking a proud town would leave off the welcome sign.
