Caledon is the kind of place southern Ontario makes in bulk: Peel Region, about an hour outside Toronto, roughly 70,000 people, and a township that grew in 1973 when another town dissolved and most of the land north of Mayfield Road came its way. Its older self was smaller. In 1869 there was a village called Belfountain, population 100, on the river, with stage coaches running in and out and lots selling for $20.

All seven of Caledon's murders arrive in one episode, 381, and they read less like seven stories than one long one. A woman vanished from a Toronto gift shop in October 1991. Days later her blood-stained car was found in a ditch near Caledon, and months on a skeleton, probably hers, lay in the woods 457 metres from where the car had been left. The dates run from October 1991 to July 1992; the victims number seven.

That is the entire entry. Rank 196 overall and first in Ontario rest on that single episode, which is worth saying plainly: this counts the show's cases, not the town's crime rate. James and Jimmie pick where to look.
