Canton Township sits about forty minutes outside Detroit, a Detroit suburb in Wayne County with a population the hosts put at 94,000 in 2023. The three cases within twenty five miles form a loose ring around it: one in the township itself, and two nineteen miles off, in Webster Township to the west and Brownstown Township to the south east. Webster is rural, a farm story; Brownstown was still largely farmland when its case takes place.
Dates of 1977, 1985 and 1990, one victim in each, mean the total is not one dreadful night with a long list of names. It is three separate episodes, spread over thirteen years, quietly adding up. And it is worth saying plainly what the number measures: the show's cases, not the township's crime statistics. James and Jimmie decide where the car stops, and this corner of Michigan gives them plenty of reasons to stop.
