One episode carries the whole count. All eight of the show's murders within 25 miles of this Rio Arriba County village sit in a single case, dated January 1991, and all eight happen in Chimayo itself. Rank 161 overall, first in New Mexico, rests on episode 22 and nothing else. No string of small towns along one road, no decades-long drumbeat: one date, eight victims, and no other case inside 25 miles.

The setting explains the visit. Chimayo is a census-designated place of 5.5 square miles and 2,572 people, high in the mountains at 6,730 feet, an hour and a half from Albuquerque and half an hour from Santa Fe. It is famous for El Santuario de Chimayo, the chapel built privately in 1816 and handed to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe in 1929, where pilgrims come to touch the holy dirt, and for its heirloom chillies. It has also been known since the mid-20th century as a remote centre of heroin distribution.

Worth saying plainly: this counts the show's cases, not the town's crime rate. The show picks the towns, and here it picked once, hard.
