These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Cottonwood is in Shasta County, inland between Redding and Red Bluff. It started in 1849, during the Gold Rush, as a stagecoach town and a stop for supplies and food before the Oregon Trail, and its first post office opened in 1852. The 2022 population was 3,280. It ranks 157th overall and third in California, on three murders.
One episode covers all three. Episode 292 went out in 2022, with cases running from 1996 to 1998, one of them dated 16 May 1998, and three victims between them.
Cottonwood is the hotspot on its own, with no cluster of towns around it sharing the total. A stagecoach stop that fed travellers heading north now sits 157th in the league.
