Depoy is barely a town: an unincorporated spot on a gravel road in Muhlenberg County, western Kentucky, small enough that the hosts said there are no stats for it, and six minutes from Greenville. It was a stop on the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad and took its name from a railroad agent, shortened to Depoy. Greenville was settled around 1799 as a new county seat and incorporated about 50 years later.
Four of the five murders come from a single episode, episode 698, all of them in Depoy itself in June 1999, when four people were killed. The fifth, one killing, is 17 miles away in Madisonville in Hopkins County, from episode 655, dated January 2003. So one episode carries most of the count, and the five sit within four years rather than spread across decades.
The total counts the show's cases, not crime. The show picks the towns, so rank 269 overall and third in Kentucky says what James and Jimmie chose to cover, not how dangerous the place is.
