These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.

Aberdeen is in Brown County in north-eastern South Dakota, a town of about 28,000. The first party of settlers was four people with three horses, two mules, 15 cattle and two wagons. They stayed the winter alone, and another group joined them in spring. Fur traders had come through in the 1820s.

Episode 335, aired in 2022, carries both of the town's murders: one in May 1985, one in 1999, 14 years apart. The population was put at 28,180. Aberdeen ranks 220 overall and third in South Dakota, on one town, one episode and two murders. Nothing else within 25 miles competes for them.
