These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Fishkill sits in southeastern New York, in Dutchess County, on the creek that gave it its name. In Dutch that is fish and stream, so once you translate it the town is a fishy little river. It was Wappinger territory, settled in 1685, and now holds about 23,500 people. In 1996 PETA asked it to choose a name less suggestive of violence towards fish. Fishkill said no.
At 73rd on the league, the Fishkill area's six murders come from just two episodes, and one of them does most of the work. Episode 213 accounts for five, all on a single January night in 2007, in a rented house in Fishkill itself. Episode 295 adds one, eighteen miles away in New Paltz, a college town built around the state university campus across the river from Poughkeepsie. The two episodes are ten years apart.
