These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Fruitville is on Florida's central west coast, close enough to Sarasota to be called a suburb of it. In the mid 1980s it held about three thousand people. The 2020 count put the population at 13,541 across 7.1 square miles.
The area's two claimed cases sit five miles and fourteen years apart, one in Fruitville and one in Sarasota, so there is no cluster to explain. Episode 196 covers two days in April 1986, when a thirty-three year old man was living in a trailer park in Fruitville. Before he ended up in Florida he had lived in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Texas. Episode 593 goes to Sarasota in July 2000, and to a widowed mother from Michigan who had raised two sons alone, got into AOL chat rooms, and married a man who flew over to meet her.
