These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.

Green River sits in Sweetwater County in western Wyoming, and the railroad is the only reason it exists. The Union Pacific platted it in 1867, when the ground was still Dakota Territory. It incorporated a month after Wyoming Territory was created in 1868, under Dakota law, because Wyoming hadn't written its own, then spent about 20 years arguing over whether it was really a town before reincorporating in 1891. In 1931 it became the first town known to ban door-to-door salesmen, and others copied the ordinance.

The hotspot is one episode covering one murder in one town, which puts it 369th overall and third in Wyoming. Episode 410, aired in 2023, covers the killing over the night of 16 to 17 August 2002. The hosts call Green River the main town, and the case belongs to Jamestown, a small town on its edge. The victim was 41, had four daughters, and had been separated for six years from a husband who lived in Utah.
