The reviews

5 stars

“A great little city to raise a family in, with lots of programmes for kids, high-paying jobs and reasonable house prices; the bluffs and the river make it beautiful, there is endless outdoor recreation and it is a very safe community with a city-run recreation centre.”

3 stars

“The crime rate is relatively low, though DUIs are frequent; the police usually do a good job of catching drunk drivers.”

“The town is not full of excitement and encouragement, and a large number of soon-to-be adults will spend their entire lives there without trying to go anywhere else.”

The story

Green River, the main town, sits in Sweetwater County in the western part of the state, with a population of 11,887.

Ward was 41 and had four daughters. She was married to Arlin Ward, who lived in Utah, and they had been separated for six years.

He got home about 8.30 p.m. and carried on drinking. A neighbour heard angry shouting; Cunningham admitted the affair. The two men argued, then calmed down.

About 11 p.m. they walked into her house, where she was in the bathroom fixing her hair before a night out. They drank more beer and both passed out.

Ward telephoned her friend Joanne Richards for a lift, but Richards had been drinking since noon. Between 4.30 and 5 a.m. she went out with acquaintances.

At about 5.30 Cunningham woke to find Ward straddling and kissing him. He ordered her out. She refused, and he berated her for three minutes while Cunningham quietly pulled his boots on. Ward sat down at the dining table beside Cunningham. She said he would not. They went back and forth five times, then he grabbed her by the hair, bent her back in the chair and stabbed her once in the chest, perforating the right ventricle and right atrium and cutting her coronary artery in half.

Cunningham walked out and called 911 from a neighbour's house at 5.55 a.m. Officer Jason Love found Ward between two vehicles in the driveway, still alive, with drag marks leading from the house.

His blood alcohol measured 0.15 and 0.20; Ward's was 0.284.

His defence never disputed the stabbing and argued heat of passion and manslaughter. Ward is buried at the Viola Labarge cemetery in Lincoln County, Wyoming.
