These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Hilo is on the big island, in Hawaii County, a sugar town that grew up around the mill and the bay. Plantations spread through the late 1800s and brought workers from Asia; by 1887, 26,000 Chinese workers were cutting cane across Hawaii, and the Hilo Sugar Mill was turning out 3,500 tons a year. The breakwater across Hilo Bay took from about 1910 to 1929 to finish.
Hilo has one episode, 419, and two murders. The cases sit twenty-four years apart, one on Christmas Eve 1991 and one in April 2015, a long gap with a second killing at the end of it. The episode opens far from the island, with a woman born in Virginia in 1968 and raised in a three-bedroom house outside Washington, then works its way west.
Rank 253 overall and second in Hawaii is a modest placing. One episode and two murders is a toehold in a league this size.
