These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Nettie sits in Nicholas County, West Virginia, and the Nettie area is a scatter of small towns within twenty-five miles of it: Nettie itself, Victor twenty-one miles out in Fayette County and Webster Springs at twenty-four in Webster County. Three episodes, four murders, rank 53 overall and second in the state.
The cases run from August 2009 to November 2016. Nettie gave up one killing in October 2009, Webster Springs one that August, and Victor two victims in November 2016. Episode 52 took Webster Springs in 2018, and two 2026 episodes covered the rest. Nothing here is one bloody afternoon. Three episodes of one or two victims each add up to four.
James and Jimmie introduce Nettie and then drift into Summersville, laid out in 1824 and named for a local judge, burnt to the ground during the Civil War by a Confederate spy and rebuilt in 1884, with Union and Confederate camps on opposite sides of town. They call it the world's largest speed trap, where US 19 widens and northern travellers get tickets. These are small towns with long memories, and the show keeps finding them.
