Perry is a Bear River valley town: farming country in Box Elder County, north central Utah, about an hour north of Salt Lake City, with 5,444 people. In 1896 a rainstorm came before the snow had melted and sent a flood into the reservoir, which destroyed homes and covered farms in gravel. The place was called Three Mile Creek until 1898, and by 1900 it had 261 residents.

The hotspot takes in two towns. Perry's own case is episode 746, a single murder from May 1984. Episode 41 is 21 miles away in Washington Terrace, a town between Ogden and Salt Lake City that began in 1942 as a housing project for government workers, before its barracks became single-family houses. That case is a single murder from June 1989, five years after the Perry one. It comes to rank 125 overall, and third in Utah.
