Perry is a town of 5,444 people in Box Elder County, in north central Utah, about an hour north of Salt Lake City. Settlers laid claim to the Bear River valley from 1851 and Mormons settled it in 1853. The town was once called Three Mile Creek and was renamed Perry in 1898. The 1896 flood wrecked its homes and farms, and by 1900 it had 261 residents.
In the early hours of 26 May 1984, Memorial Day weekend, two Utah State University students, Ali Sabbah and Basim Barish, took a break from studying for finals and drove toward Ogden on US 89. At about three in the morning they stopped at the Texaco Short Stop in Perry, the only place open. A lean, bearded man of about thirty with scratches on his arms and what looked like blood on his clothes and shoes came out and pumped their gas himself. He also fetched Barish's cigarettes and would not let him go inside. The change he gave included a one dollar bill with a fresh blood stain. Sabbah, an art student, drew the attendant himself. At about 4:30 a.m. officers found a blood trail leading to a locked storage room and, through a window, a man's body.
The dead man was Bradley Perry, the genuine attendant. He was the oldest of five children of Newell and Claudia Perry, an Eagle Scout and active Latter-day Saint who had survived a car crash on his mission in Louisiana. He had transferred to Weber State to study radiology, was engaged to Laura Boyd and was working nights for extra wedding money, staying behind while his family went to California. His hands were tied with electrical cord. He had been stabbed with a foot-long screwdriver and a knife, hit with a cast iron bell and crushed with a soda syrup canister. About $100 was missing and the safe was open.
The case went cold. After the burial the Perry home was burgled and Brad's room fouled. Police looked at him and at assistant manager Thomas Nager, who had the safe key, had not turned up for work and had been stealing and dealing drugs, along with Michael Caldwell and hundreds of others. The Perrys' neighbour's daughter, Amy Hugie, who became their lawyer, was elected county attorney in 2002. In 2003 Detective Scott Cosgrove told her he had run out of leads.
The bloody dollar bill had been kept frozen since 1984.
Brad's brother Lee became a Utah Highway Patrol trooper and served in the Utah House of Representatives from 2011 to 2020.
