These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Hilo is on the island of Hawaii, the big island, in Hawaii County. The show sets the scene the way an old sugar ledger would: plantations expanding through the late 1800s, workers arriving from Asia for the jobs, 26,000 Chinese labourers on Hawaii's cane fields by 1887, and the Hilo Sugar Mill producing 3,500 tons a year. A breakwater across Hilo Bay was begun around 1910 and finished in 1929.
Episode 419 carries two murders from one town, a generation apart: 24 December 1991 and 27 April 2015. Twenty-four years between them, both in Hilo itself, zero miles from the centre.
Hilo lands at 247 overall and second in Hawaii, modest for a town with this much history behind it. Sugar built the place, and the league counts what it counts.
