Manistique is a small city in Schoolcraft County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, on the shore of Lake Michigan where the Manistique River meets the lake. James Pietragallo describes a shrinking tourist town of 2,980 people, the only incorporated city in the county, with no McDonald's and the nearest traffic light fifty miles away. In April 2015 three people were found burned in an SUV on a rural gravel road outside town, and the case that followed exposed a small drug network and a prosecution that collapsed.
He was also a mid-level dealer in cocaine and morphine.
Heather Aldrich was 25, from Germfask.
She drove to River Road with another man and they shot up in the car. The next day Heather found an ounce of cocaine in a PVC pipe buried in his backyard and took it, along with about $2,000 in change he kept in Gatorade bottles. She then took two friends to the same spot and they used the cocaine.
Come and get it.' She was frightened but wanted the morphine. She hid her car at a casino, called her sister Carrie Ann Nelson, and met her and her boyfriend at their mother's house in Germfask.
Heather slept at her mother's house. Next morning, April 16th, she woke sober and decided the morphine was worth the risk, asking Carrie Ann and Jodie for a ride so it would be safer. Before leaving she posted song lyrics on Facebook: 'the needle in my arm, the thoughts in my head, what's it matter anyway, by morning I'll be dead.'
On April 17th a married couple with two children were driving down River Road when they saw a burned-out 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada on the side of the road, smoke still rising. Inside were three smouldering bodies: Heather Aldrich, Carrie Ann Nelson and Jodie Hutchinson.
He denied the killings.
The autopsy found endocarditis.
He said he forced the sisters into the basement at gunpoint and tied them up.
