The story

In May 1987 a man calling himself Mark Bloomfield approached modelling agencies, saying he was casting teenagers for an anti-drug commercial. Mabs Martin, 69, who owned the Showcase Finishing and Model School, agreed to supply two girls: Alicia Toma, 14, from Reno, and Monica Burge, 12, from Sparks. On a Saturday in May 1987 she drove them to South Lake Tahoe with her friend Dorothy 'Doddy' Walsh, 67, to meet him at his trailer in a trailer park.

He took them into a back room with plywood walls, no mirrors and eyeholes in the door, and attacked them. He struck Alicia in the jaw with a blackjack, punched Mabs Martin and forced the two older women to the ground. Doddy Walsh begged for her life and held on to her handbag; he beat her about the head until she was unconscious and bleeding, then strangled her with a flex cuff. He dragged the bodies out in plastic bags and left them in the back of the trailer, Mabs in one bag and Doddy in three because of the blood.

He kept the girls in the soundproof room for two nights. The next morning he gave them eggs, strawberries and vitamins, let them watch television, made them exercise to a workout video and dyed his hair orange. Over the two days he pretended that an 18-year-old boy was in the room and sexually assaulted both girls, kissing and touching Monica and then Alicia, and trying to rape Alicia. Both girls begged him to stop and he did. He said the tape was no good and would have to be made again, and talked of holding them for ransom or releasing them and flying to Europe.

Meanwhile Alicia's stepfather was searching. He telephoned the agency, then broke into its office, found the roller deck and traced the girl who had first been chosen and then rejected. She remembered a BMW in the car park with a plate she had read as 'TV teen'. His brother-in-law drove around South Lake Tahoe and found the car at the Nugget.

The FBI had the trailer under surveillance. He went to the post office to look for his wanted poster and then telephoned the FBI himself, giving his address. The girls were found in the room and the bodies of the two women in the back. His explanation was that there were too many bad things in the world, too much smoking in the casinos and too many drunk drivers. He had 10,000 dollars in cash and was planning to flee to Europe.

On June 23, 1987 the Clark County Justice Court in Las Vegas issued a warrant for him over the 1981 murder of Sheila Joe Keester, 12, whose body had been found in a wash on the east side of Las Vegas; the bite marks matched and an old girlfriend identified a sketch from the time as him.

The defence failed to exclude the trailer evidence, the court holding that there was probable cause to believe someone was in danger. The defence conceded the killings and argued insanity, with three psychiatrists saying he was delusional, believed in messages from God and treated 45 and 46 as go numbers and 26 as a stop number. Prosecution experts described him as a manipulator with a mixed personality disorder and legally responsible. His diaries were read out, including an entry of October 15, 1984 about young girls and one of March 4, 1985, and a diagram of a room within a room.

Judge Terrence Finney called his conduct probably the most evil he had been involved in, and the district attorney Ronald Tepper said he deserved to die.
