Sunbury, Pennsylvania, sits in Northumberland County in east-central Pennsylvania, about two hours and forty-five minutes from Philadelphia and four hours from Pittsburgh.
Troy LaFerrara was forty-two, a big, heavily built Italian-American contractor from Port Treverton. He had a degree in civil engineering from Penn State and professional licences as an engineer, land surveyor and sewage enforcement officer. He worked as senior resident engineer at the Lycoming County landfill and had served on the Chatman Union Sewage Authority and the Port Treverton Township board. He had been married to Colleen since June 2011 and had no children. On 11 November 2013 he answered an online advertisement offering companionship for a hundred dollars.
Her childhood was badly damaged. When she was about three her aunt Melissa and uncle Richard 'Rick' Fernandez moved in five houses down. The abuse came to light when Ashley told their parents, and their mother went to the police.
She was having violent dreams by the age of ten and later said she had killed her pet parakeet. At twelve she joined a satanic cult; by thirteen she was addicted to heroin, running away from home and, by her own account, prostituting hers. She told her mother that a cult leader named Forrest owned her and had carved a swastika and his name into her skin. She claimed that cult members had forced an abortion on her, a claim a doctor later said was untrue. In 2011 she became pregnant and named Forrest as the father. In March 2012 a court placed her in the custody of a different uncle, Arlen Fletcher, who lived near Coats, North Carolina. There she gave birth to a daughter, Aria, enrolled in college, took a job at a grocery store and seemed, for a time, to be settling down.
Three days later they both quit their jobs and moved to central Pennsylvania, telling people they were starting again.
Money was short. He insisted there was no sex involved; the police took a different view. Several men arranged meetings in early November and failed to appear. He drove; she directed him six miles to Sunbury, where he owned a house he was renovating.
On the way she told him she was sixteen, not eighteen. He said that was fine; according to her, that answer sealed his fate. LaFerrara took some time to die. They took his wallet, dumped the body in an alley, drove to Walmart for cleaning supplies, then could not remember which alley they had used.
The body was found the next morning by a man looking out of his kitchen window. LaFerrara had been stabbed and strangled and was still in the alley. Police found no shortage of possible motives in his business dealings, but the nature of the killing pointed elsewhere. On 19 November she posted a photograph of a new wedding ring from Zales.
He saw her on Valentine's Day 2014. She admitted the killing but said she had been looking for bad men to punish, and that she would have let LaFerrara live if he had refused her when she said she was sixteen. Then she said it was not the first time. She claimed to have killed fewer than a hundred people, then said she stopped counting at twenty-two. She described a first murder at thirteen with Forrest in Alaska, a woman tortured in a forest and put through a hole in the ice, a man in Texas, a man in Florida and others in California and North Carolina. The FBI, local police in North Carolina and Alaska state troopers found no evidence for any of it. Her sister said she was obsessed with the television series Dexter and was repeating its plots. Her father said she had been to California once and Texas a few times, always in his sight.
Prosecutors sought the death penalty because the killing happened during a robbery. Troy LaFerrara is buried at the Whitmer's Evangelical Church Association cemetery in Port Treverton.
