Bellevue, Idaho, is a small town of about 2,300 people in Blaine County, around two hours ten minutes from Boise and four hours from Salt Lake City, close to the Sun Valley resort. It began as a mining town in the 1860s, was chartered in 1882, turned to sheep and then to tourism after the resort was built in 1936. It suffered a fire in 1905 and an accidental explosion of dynamite and shells in 1957. The episode was recorded live in Nashville.
Alan and Diane Johnson married in the early 1980s and were well loved in the town. Alan was half owner of a landscaping company and the couple hosted parties and trap shooting outings from their large house, which had a guest house at the back. Diane's son Matt was born in 1981, before the wedding. He was treated as Alan's son but the family knew he was not. By 2003 Matt was 22 and studying at the University of Idaho, an hour away.
Her parents strongly disapproved. Friends said she could do better, and she showed off an engagement ring after volleyball practice. She complained to Matt, who told her to stop seeing him.
Alan and his brother-in-law went there, took her home and warned Bruno away. She asked her mother for the key to the family gun safe and was told to ask her father. She phoned Matt repeatedly to complain, and he had a bad feeling on Sunday night but decided to call back the next day.
She said she heard one shot, knocked on her parents' door and heard another. Deputies, one a friend of the family, found Alan and Diane dead. Alan had apparently stepped out of the shower, been shot and walked to the bedroom, where Diane had been shot through the comforter. Sheriff Walt Femling called it the most disturbing scene he had seen. A .264 Winchester Magnum rifle was found on the other side of the house, so a murder suicide was ruled out. Police stopped the garbage truck and recovered shell casings, a left glove (the right was in Diane's car), a latex glove, a blood-spattered pink robe, a pregnancy test, the guest house keys and a pistol magazine and rifle shells wrapped in a bandana.
Her account changed several times, including how many shots she heard and whether the door was open, and she admitted the robe was hers. She blamed a fired maid or her boyfriend. The rifle belonged to Spiegel, who had been in Boise, and its fingerprints matched nobody. Bruno showed up at the scene and was cleared by DNA. Police learned that Alan had a $600,000 life insurance policy and Diane an $80,000 one, split between the two children.
About 700 people attended a memorial on 11 September 2003. Bruno was deported on 12 September. The defence argued there was no blood on her clothes and that blood on the back of the robe did not fit; the prosecution argued she wore it backwards as a shield.
The Innocence Project took the case in 2014. The fingerprints were traced to the man who helped Spiegel move in, and new DNA testing was refused.
