Chubbuck, Idaho, is a small town of about 14,470 people in Bannock County, four and a quarter square miles of suburb wedged against Pocatello in the south-east of the state. Its motto is 'built for business, designed for living', and in the spring of 2006 two sixteen-year-olds met at Pocatello High School there.
His family moved often, mostly around Utah, and in 2006 they came to the Pocatello area, settling near Chubbuck. He enrolled at Pocatello High School and did not fit in. He had been in and out of counselling for years, for writing about suicide and about killing other people, and in the eighth grade in Utah he and two other boys had been caught planning a school shooting. On MySpace he wrote that he was 'sick in the head and no one knows it'. Other pupils knew him as the new boy who talked about killing people, and most of them took it for talk.
The two became close friends almost at once in 2006, bound by horror films and a shared fascination with serial killers. They began planning a low-budget horror film together, and then, over the summer, something else.
On the night of 21 September 2006 the pair drove around with a video camera, filming themselves. They talked about killing a girl from school if she was home alone, and about calling on Cassie Stoddart and her boyfriend Matt Beckham. At 12.10 that day the two skipped fourth period and, on camera, wrote out a death list for that night.
That night she was house-sitting for her aunt and uncle, Alison and Frank Contreras, at their house out in the countryside. Her boyfriend Matt Beckham was with her. The two boys had been invited over, arrived about seven, were given a tour, watched part of Kill Bill Volume 2, and left about ten. About twenty minutes after they left, the power went out at the house: the pair had gone into the basement and flipped the circuit breaker, hoping Cassie would come down to reset it. She did not, and they eventually went upstairs.
Matt Beckham rang his mother to ask if he could stay the night because the power was out. At 11.31 that night the camera came back on in the car. 'We just left her house. This is not a fucking joke.' He said he had stabbed her in the throat and watched her life disappear. Cassie had been stabbed about thirty times; twelve wounds were potentially fatal, and two knives had been used, one serrated and one not.
Her aunt and uncle found her body on Sunday 24 September and called the police. A search of his bedroom with his parents' consent produced a knife sheath.
He said they wore masks, black clothing and gloves, and carried knives. He then led detectives and his father to Black Rock Canyon, where the pair had buried a bag of evidence: masks, gloves, black shirts, knife sheaths, a knife with Cassie's blood on it, and the videotape.
