Vincennes, Indiana, is a small city in Knox County in the south-west corner of the state, on the lower Wabash River, about two and a quarter hours from Indianapolis and three hours from Louisville. It calls itself Indiana's first city, and this case belongs to the poor, rural country around it.
In July 1989 his Little League team won a tournament game 15-0 and he hit a home run, a moment the episode treats as the high point of his life. In 1991, in the sixth grade, he completed a seventeen-week drug abuse resistance education programme. By August 1997, aged eighteen, he was booked at the Bicknell police department at ten o'clock at night on a battery warrant and held on 500 dollars' bond.
On 14 September 1998 he walked into the Circle A Food Mart on 6th Street with a baseball bat and attacked a man and the people with him, swinging at shelves and knocking goods to the floor. Several people took the bat from him and beat him; he then produced a handgun and fired at Alan Wilson, the man he had come to fight. He left in a green Oldsmobile with Richard Poe and Melissa Van Patten.
He then turned the sword around and threw it at the officer like a javelin, got back into his car and rammed the police cruiser, reversing and hitting it three more times.
Bond was set at 25,000 dollars and Christopher Ramsey was appointed as his lawyer. In November 1999 Stremming received a merit badge from the city council; a month later he was suspended over an altercation at a McDonald's.
By 2007 he was living with a new girlfriend, Allison Rinch.
That night Monique was told by her friend Heather Jackson that Rinch and Heather's boyfriend Andrew Ricketts were having sex. He bought a twelve-pack and drank through the night, wandering the streets.
At seven in the morning on 17 November he returned to Monique's house and passed out. He woke about one o'clock and at half past one took a call from Andrew Ricketts, who told him he was the man who had been with Rinch and that he had seen Rinch performing oral sex on Chris Lockhart in her truck.
He took a utility knife from Shea Fry's toolbox, and Fry drove him to a CVS where they bought cigarettes, lighter fluid and Sudafed.
Shortly afterwards Amber heard Rinch scream and ran up to the apartment. He walked out covered in blood and said, call the cops, I killed the bitch. Amber told him the police were coming and that he should leave; he told her to leave instead. As she went out she turned and saw him lift Rinch off the floor by the neck and carry her into the bedroom. When Amber came back he had blood over his hands and sleeves and said it again; he then walked out, stood on the landing and smoked a cigarette. Neighbours asked what had happened and he told them, I killed her.
Rinch was still breathing but choking on her own blood, and a bloody kitchen knife lay above her head. She had no pulse by the time the ambulance came and was pronounced dead in the emergency room. She was 21. The autopsy found that the knife had been driven through her neck, severing the carotid artery, jugular vein, oesophagus and windpipe, with saw marks on the vertebrae where he had thrust the blade down to the bone.
Allison Jane Rinch, who had turned 21 a month before she died, is buried in Bethel Cemetery in Freelandville, Indiana.
