The story

In 1994 the Hodges family lived on Virginia Avenue in Vinton, Virginia, a small town outside Roanoke. William Blaine Hodges, 41, worked as a window clerk at the Vinton Post Office. His wife Theresa, 37, born Theresa Fulcher, stayed at home with their daughters, Winter, 11, and Anna, 3.

In 1994 Blaine was caught stealing money from his post office drawer. On Friday 26 August 1994 he and Theresa attended an Amway conference in Charlotte, leaving the girls with a relative. Blaine collected them on the Saturday. A friend spoke to him by telephone around five that evening; a later call rang out unanswered. At 4.30 p.m. Theresa left a message with a friend about the Monday car pool and called back from a pay phone at a petrol station near her own home. At seven that evening a friend found a note on the door: 'had an emergency, back late Sunday, y Monday, Theresa.' Two more friends called at 8.45 p.m. The house was dark apart from a light in the basement, and the telephone just rang.

At 4.30 a.m. on Monday 29 August, Robert Scott Arney, who was hearing impaired and unable to speak, saw thick smoke over Virginia Avenue and had to find someone to report the fire. Firefighters entered through the second storey. Downstairs they found Theresa on the couch, strangled with a ligature and still burning. Upstairs Blaine lay dead on the bed, unburned, with a single gunshot wound to the left temple. In another bedroom Winter and Anna lay together on the same bed. Each had been shot twice in the head, Winter at contact range, Anna from within inches, and Anna's body carried soot and mild burns. A single Caucasian pubic hair lay on the bed between the girls. A .22 handgun was found beside Blaine, and the house had been set alight with petrol. The telephone line had been cut.

The gun beside Blaine was missing its barrel, so it could not be test-fired. He failed to appear for a follow-up interview the next day.

Within days his co-workers found a pair of his jeans soaking in a bucket of water and cleaning fluid, and his sneakers appeared freshly detailed. A search of the dumpster behind the Bruco print shop produced mail addressed to him, a T-shirt identical to one Winter owned, a multi-page document about his belief that the eleven-year-old was sexually attracted to him, several tapes and a sketch of four stick figures with lines to the heads of the male and the children and a circle around the female. A year ier he had posted two packages to his sister in Indiana for safekeeping; they contained photographs of the Hodges children and 62 audio tapes in which he called Winter sexually sophisticated, claimed her parents were using her as bait to entrap him, and described secretly recording her. Chemical testing found fuel oil on the jeans matching an accelerant from the house, and five-gallon cans at the scene matched cans owned by Kandler Oil, where he had worked. The pubic hair was a DNA match.

He wrote to a newspaper from hiding on 12 October 1994, complaining that the police had lied and that lawyers had told him to leave Virginia. In fact he had moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he used his real name, worked at Sky Vision Signs and Designs and was known as a helpful neighbour who walked a three-legged dog.

Governor Mark Warner refused clemency in 2003 and the courts refused a stay.

The episode also follows a second case. They have never been found. Months later one mother took a call from someone claiming to be her daughter. The hosts end by promising to look into buying the house and digging it up.
