In January 2006 the body of a 55-year-old woman named Nancy Motes Wingfield was found in pieces in and around her home in Collinsville, Virginia, a small town just outside Martinsville. The story of how she got there began nearly a decade earlier. Before 1997 Nancy was described as a good-natured, gregarious woman who ran a beauty shop out of her house. Nancy withdrew after that, stopped running the shop, and spent the following years on painkillers and sleeping pills. Her daughters, Tina and Jeanine, believed she was suffering from severe depression.
Neighbours, including Martha Lee, soon began gossiping. Tina last saw her mother on December 29th, 2005, and Nancy's boyfriend spoke to her by telephone on January 1st. When Tina came to the house on January 12th and found her mother's car still in the driveway, she reported her missing. Deputies searched the house and found nothing out of order except Nancy's dentures, her regular glasses and her pills left behind, and a single speck of blood behind the toilet handle.
He said he was angry that Nancy had been rude to their niece and had threatened their mother, and that she had wanted to die, so he had done her a favour. He described strangling her with a nylon cord while she napped on her bed on January 2nd, then carrying her to the bathtub and cutting her into small pieces with a hacksaw and a knife. He said the dismemberment took twelve hours. Over the next six days he packed the pieces into waterbed baffles and layers of plastic, buried them in five holes, scrubbed the bathroom with bleach and the acid used to remove mortar from bricks, and burned the tools and the rubbish bin behind the house.
The search had already used a bloodhound team from North Carolina and divers who went to 80 feet in an abandoned rock quarry near the house without finding anything.
He was taken to Memorial Hospital of Martinsville, intubated and put on a ventilator for several days, and was thought likely to die. He was later brought by ambulance to show where he had buried the remains. On January 24th three plastic bags of remains were unearthed in a wooded area along Richardson Drive, and the final bag was found on January 25th in another wooded area nearby. In all she had been cut into 19 pieces, buried at least three feet deep in each place, with the hole at her own house five feet deep and four feet wide.
A special prosecutor was appointed because the local prosecutor had worked with his public defender, and a psychological assessment found him sane. Nancy's daughters wept. The prosecutor called the killing cold and calculating and the product of a family feud.
The reason recorded was that he had no interest in it.
