He had run a sawmill for years, owned hundreds of acres and bootlegged liquor into dry country. He and his wife Gladys, who was 60, had married around 1930 and had been locked in divorce proceedings since the mid-1960s, unable to agree how to divide the property.
A few days later Deskins asked him to kill Gladys instead, offering $7,000 because she was giving him trouble and would not give him a divorce.
On the night of 11 July 1971 the three crossed the creek on foot, climbed up to the railway tracks and waited about an hour until the lights went out in Gladys's house. Gladys was found the next day, 12 July, when she failed to appear at a divorce hearing and neighbours went to check on her. She was in bed in her nightclothes, soaked in blood, with half her head taken off by a shotgun and 13 stab wounds in her back, neck and arms. Her ribs had also been fractured, and nothing had been stolen.
Davidson, who worked for prosecutor Francis Dale Birke in his coal business, told Birke, who gave him a worthless envelope of documents and had him wired by Sergeant Marian Campbell of the Kentucky State Police.
Deskins testified in his own defence and said he barely knew the men.
Cash was an agriculturist who had worked there nine years and lived on the farm with his wife and three children. He abandoned the van at the junior high school in Princeton, shaved his beard and cut his hair in a petrol station toilet, and bought a bus ticket to Indianapolis, paying in single dollar bills.
Gladys's daughter Barbara Hale, who had made more than 100 trips from Michigan to Pike County, said the family had no confidence in the Kentucky justice system.
