Penfield is a town of about 39,000 people in Monroe County, New York, fifteen minutes outside Rochester in the north-west of the state. On 13 July 2003 Tabitha Bryant, twenty-six years old and the mother of two small sons, was shot in the right eye and stabbed fourteen times as she slept on a pull-out couch in the living room of the family's four-bedroom house. The plot behind her death had been assembled over the previous year out of affairs, cocaine and a custody fight.
Tabitha Marie Basset was born in Iowa on 8 October 1976 to Virginia and Carol Leroy Basset. Her parents split in 1978; her father went to Germany with the army and her mother went her own way, leaving Tabitha and her older sister Samantha with their grandparents. Relatives described her as a rejected little girl who never bonded with either parent, and her whole personality as a desire to be accepted. She graduated from wood Central School in 1994, worked as a waitress and failed her exam to become a certified nursing assistant.
A serious heart condition and the surgery and radiation that treated it stunted his growth, leaving him five foot two and often teased. He graduated from Penfield High School in 1976 and from Vermont Law School in 1988, then opened his own law office in 1995, handling wills, divorces, bankruptcies and minor criminal cases.
Tabitha married her high school sweetheart, Arnold Martin, in August 1996 at the Howard Community Center in Howard, New York. He was eighteen years older. He pushed the divorce through and married her on 26 December 1997, when she was twenty-one and he was forty. They honeymooned in the Cayman Islands and had two sons, KC and Stephen. She worked at M&T Bank and part-time as a secretary in his office, had her teeth fixed and remade herself as a lawyer's wife.
By 2002 she was finding more messages from another woman and showing printouts to colleagues. They became regulars. In January 2003, at one of those clubs, she met Keith Cromwell, a forty-seven-year-old who worked second shift making industrial brushes at Schlegel, and by Valentine's Day they were having an affair. Tabitha, a Christian, was torn about it but happy to be loved.
He paid for prostitutes, arranged group sex in motels and used cocaine. He called Tabitha, who invited him to stay.
On 11 July he filed for divorce. Over Memorial Day weekend the pair moved into a trailer in West Bloomfield with friends and used and sold more cocaine.
That evening he confronted Tabitha and banished her from the bedroom to the pull-out couch. He also propositioned an escort, offering $500 up front and $4,500 after the killing; her boyfriend took the $500 and never came back.
On the night of 13 July 2003 Tabitha was on the couch under a purple afghan.
He said he had been reading upstairs, heard his wife shout "oh my God", heard gunshots and a car pulling away, and that she had a boyfriend. He said there were no weapons in the house. Deputies arrived at 12.08. Tabitha had been shot once and stabbed fourteen times; the pathologist found the stab wounds killed her and gunpowder residue put the rifle muzzle within six inches of her eye.
Tabitha is buried at wood Cemetery in Steuben County, New York.
