5 stars

“A small town where everyone is connected, with many activities and job opportunities for high school students, enthusiastic support at football games and town functions, and a community that celebrates and mourns together.”
about 0:06:02

4 stars

“For a small town it is quite all right; there is not much to do, but that is the beauty of it, and finding creative things to do, like hide and seek in Walmart or noticing things in the square, is fun.”

4 stars

“Four stars because the school is not that great but everything else is fine.”

3 stars

“Likes the community center, though it has only one basketball court; there is not much to do and no malls, but there is a Walmart and a bowling alley.”

1 star

“Lived there most of her life and thinks the town is awful, with rude and questionable people, only Walmart for shopping, a lot of crime the residents know about, awful schools with bullying and teenage pregnancies, no jobs, and nothing to do unless you have the right family name.”

The story

Linda F. Collins was born in Pocahontas, Arkansas, on 17 April 1962. She grew up poor and later said she had no running water until her teens. She went to school at Williford and in 1995, aged 33, married Philip Smith, becoming Linda Collins-Smith. They had two children, Kate and Butch. She became a real estate agent and around 2001 she and Philip bought and ran a Days Inn in Pocahontas. In 2010 she won a seat in the Arkansas House of Representatives and served from 2011 to 2013. After redistricting in 2012 she ran for the Arkansas Senate and lost by three points. That year the couple bought an independent motel, which they opened in 2013. In 2014 she won a Senate seat by more than 16 points. She and Philip separated in 2016 and divorced in October 2018. In late 2017 Philip, a circuit court judge, resigned over allegations of improper use of office equipment. In 2018 Linda lost her primary by six points. The divorce was bitter, with about $2 million in assets at stake, and Judge Ellen Brantley ordered her to divide the remaining gold and silver equally with Philip.

By 2019 Linda was telling people she feared for her safety. In mid-2019 she gave an HP computer to a friend, Benjamin Simmons, and told him to give it to the police if anything happened to her. In late May she travelled to Washington DC to try to restart her political career. She was due home on 28 May and made it home, but her family then lost contact with her; her last Twitter post was on 27 May. On 4 June her father and her son Butch went to her house. Her car was in the driveway and the door was locked. Inside they found her suitcase with its tags still on, but her purse and phone were missing, and there was a large dark stain on the kitchen floor. Outside, Butch saw a tarp that should not have been there. When he lifted it, flies swarmed out. Linda's body, wrapped in a blanket and covered by the tarp, lay in the driveway beside the garage. She had been stabbed repeatedly; at least six wounds were fatal, and the total was later given as 16. At first the authorities said she had died from a gunshot wound.

The cameras were missing from the house. On 8 November Philip told investigators that about $25,000 in gold and silver coins were missing from the home. Then footage was found on a computer at the house. It showed Becky holding a bloody knife and tampering with the cameras, and another video showed a woman screaming while Becky put a large knife into a purse. There was video of Becky buying bleach and of her holding a knife over the body. A nighttime video showed someone hiding under a white sheet and then going back inside. She claimed the video was a prank and that the blood was from chicken she had cooked.

Becky had told detectives she last saw Linda on 28 May, but her fiance said she had been to the house several times that week, and she had forged Linda's signature on cheques. She offered a bag of gold and silver coins from Philip's house, but they were gone: she had sold jewellery and coins at two Memphis gold buyers and Golden Diamond Prospectors in Little Rock for $15,110.

She told the court she went to Linda's house, intentionally killed her and hid the body, and that she had been stealing money and snapped when confronted. She was transferred out of Arkansas for security reasons.
