The story

Small Town Murder visits Marmaduke, Arkansas, a town of about 1,331 people in Greene County in the north east of the state. It is named after Confederate Major General John Sappington Marmaduke, who later served as governor of Missouri but had little to do with the place. The railway arrived in 1882, the town was incorporated in 1909, and a tornado on 2 April 2006 destroyed at least half of it. The hosts read out reviews of the town, a demographic profile that includes a median household income of $34,000 against almost $58,000 nationally, a median home price of $77,800, and last year's Independence Day programme.

The main story begins on 28 April 1979, when two turkey hunters on a gravel road outside Marmaduke find the body of a man in his thirties shot many times. He is Carl Lipe, born in 1946. The people involved were two couples of similar age. Carl Lipe and his wife Rosa moved into a house behind the store, and in February 1979 Rosa began working there because the Lipes were short of money.

Carl refused. Over the next weeks the s and Rosa agreed to remove him. On 20 April 1979 Carl raised his life insurance from $5,000 to $16,500, and Rosa told the s. They agreed to kill him, with Rosa to give them $5,000 of the payout.

Police kept returning to Rosa. Police found a .380 Beretta there with a large magnet, and it matched the murder weapon.

The defence argued that Rosa or someone else killed Carl and pointed to the life insurance increase and a deal in which the Lipes had paid $500 towards buying the store for $8,000.

He bought land in 1989, remarried, and filed for bankruptcy in November 1994. He filed for bankruptcy again on 31 July 2007, and James believes he is still alive and voted in 2018.

James then tells a second case from southeastern Arkansas. On 31 October 1989 the body of Gladys Crow, aged 68, was found partly submerged in a pond, in a yellow body bag with concrete blocks tied to it. The wound was not fatal. Its first entry, dated 9 February 1989, compared crossbow prices.
