The marriage had been through rough patches and divorce had been discussed, but Ann did not want one, saying it would bring shame on her large Italian family.
She had been a star CYO basketball player at Shore Regional High School, spent her senior year at Red Bank Catholic school, and then attended the Grace Institute, a secretarial school in New York run by nuns, before working for a law firm, in reception, and finally at Bear Stearns. Friends called her a paradox: outgoing but slow to make friends, fierce on the court and easily hurt off it. She became pregnant twice in less than a year and had two abortions, and she later said she had breast surgery because she thought it would stop him looking at other women.
Between 16 February and 20 March 1982 the pair discussed ways of killing Ann, including shooting her, staging a bathtub accident, an overdose and a brake failure, before settling on a staged robbery and a stabbing. He coached her on using the knife and taped the handle with electrical tape so it would not slip. He also took Ann out often, he said, so that a date night would look normal.
She took Ann's purse and the gold crucifix from her neck to make it look like a robbery, ran off and drove to Atlantic City, where she threw the knife into the Atlantic and the purse into a river, checked in and gambled at the Playboy Club.
On 10 April 1982, less than three weeks after the murder, the pair began appearing together, starting with an arranged accidental meeting at the Museum of Natural History in New York.
She called a lawyer, and at 6.30 a.m. detectives told him they were taking her back to Monmouth County.
She testified for five hours, and the psychiatrist John P. Motley diagnosed borderline personality disorder.
