“A safe haven for rich white children who want to act like they live the lives of black kids in the projects without the crime or poverty; ironically the local police use it as an excuse for their behaviour. It has 100 thumbs up to 31 thumbs down.”about 0:23:52
“The best word for the place is, in all capital letters, gay; the people are biased, everyone talks about each other, and there is a fair share of jocks, gangsters, assholes and wannabes. It has 128 thumbs up to 92 thumbs down.”about 0:24:38
Stephen Moore grew up in Southern California, the son of Evelyn, a travel agent. He was a laid-back, easy-going man with no real ambition: he always had a job but never chased a career, he travelled widely with his mother, and his one passion was speed skating, in which he took a bronze medal at a national competition. In 2003 Evelyn retired, and in about 2004 the two of them moved from California to New Jersey, where Stephen took a job at a Honda dealership, worked his way up to assistant manager, and was well liked.
Both families were close-knit, and Stephen's friends thought the pair were opposites who somehow fitted together. They married on 1 April 2007, and their daughter Elizabeth was born in December 2008.
The marriage soured quickly. The s also began letting themselves into the house unannounced. From then on she would turn up at the Honda dealership with the baby to shout at him in front of customers and colleagues, and the pair fought constantly over custody.
The agreement also stated that if either parent died, the other would take custody of Elizabeth.
She told him to collect his tools from the back yard, took the baby inside, and knew all the while that her father was waiting out there to kill him. She heard screaming as she changed Elizabeth's nappy. By the time she came out, Stephen was lying lifeless in the driveway. A next-door neighbour, woken by the noise, called out of her window and was told to shut the window and be quiet.
Back at her house she cleaned the driveway while her father took the cleaning materials away and put them in a restaurant dumpster: plastic containers, bleach bottles, and the two by four the police would later call the murder weapon. Shortly before 4 a.m. on 18 August a woman in Long Branch saw the car on fire near her apartment. Firefighters put it out, prised open the melted boot and found the body of an adult male. Dental records identified Stephen; a pair of melted rollerblades was welded to the remains.
The investigation began as a missing-person case. Stephen did not turn up at the dealership that morning, did not answer his phone, and had told his mother the night before that he and Elizabeth were in their pyjamas watching cartoons. Police looked for a crash along his route, checked his bank records and found nothing but ordinary purchases, and eliminated his colleagues and friends. The one lead left was his ex-wife. Her divorce lawyer described the volume of litigation over text messages and the Florida move, and detectives found a dictaphone recording in which Stephen complained that Katie questioned every move he made and that he could look after their child as well as she could.
The break came from two directions. A neighbour told police that she had heard screaming in the s' yard at about 7.45 that morning and had been told to shut up.
The lawyer broke the window and pulled him out.
Evelyn Moore raised Elizabeth, who was eleven when the episode was recorded.
