At 2.46 a.m. on 3 December 2016, Neptune Township police officer Shane Leaming was sent to the Route 35 bridge in Belmar, New Jersey, after an Uber driver reported an abandoned car. The car was a 1994 Oldsmobile 88 registered to 96-year-old Lillian Stern, but its usual driver was her 19-year-old granddaughter, Sarah Stern, who lived in Neptune City. The keys were still inside. Officers searched the bank and the water below the bridge, and dive teams were called in, but they found no body and no personal effects. Sarah's mobile phone had last registered on a tower near her house at 7.49 p.m. the night before. At her home, which was cluttered with her late mother's belongings, there was no sign of her.
Sarah had graduated from Neptune High School in 2015. Her mother had died a few years earlier, leaving her father, Michael Stern, as her only surviving parent. Sarah had found a lock box containing between $20,000 and $100,000 in old, damaged cash, which she believed her mother had left for her, and she had also put money in a safe deposit box at a local bank. She had been packing her mother's things into bins and leaving them with friends and relatives.
The pair first discussed a burglary, then settled on murder. They bought walkie-talkies and carried out a dry run at the Route 35 bridge. Curry thought it was a plot for a horror movie.
He later said the killing took about half an hour and that he timed it on his phone; he put a shirt in her mouth and held her nose. He dragged her to a back bathroom and went to work. At the bridge he could not lift her over the rail; he fell and hurt his leg. Her body was never recovered.
The abandoned car was found hours later. He also said that she had lost several jobs. Police found her passport, Social Security card and American and Canadian currency in her bedroom, which suggested that she had not left the country.
In January 2017 Anthony Curry went to the police. Detectives wired Curry's car, and on 31 January 2017 the two met in Bradley Beach. He said that he had planned it for six months, that Sarah had said his name as she died and that he felt no different. He mentioned that about $9,300 had been taken, that the money was old and damaged, and that the safes had been buried. Curry's recording made the case.
The two safes were recovered on 6 February 2017, one from Sandy Hook and the original from Shark River Park. The money inside amounted to about $9,300; the safe deposit box held $25,250.
Because no body was found, the prosecution was only the second bodyless murder case in Monmouth County history.
A memorial was held on the Route 35 bridge on what would have been Sarah's 22nd birthday.
