The story

The family moved constantly, and by sixteen he had lived in ten homes, ending up in Haverstraw, Pennsylvania. He flunked the eleventh grade, went to summer school, met a boy forming a band, and became its drummer. At one of the band's first gigs he met Maria Pasinski, fifteen, from a wealthy Philadelphia family; he was seventeen. They dated in secret until she was in college, when she finally told her parents.

Rob joined the Naval Reserve at eighteen, hoped for Annapolis, spent a year preparing for the SATs and did badly, and went to Villanova instead, in the Navy ROTC. He graduated in June 1963 after a professor raised a D to a C. After Navy flight training and helicopter training he was posted to the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey. He liked Toms River, near the beach, the base and Philadelphia, with cheap houses, and they settled there. They married on December 28th, 1963, and their son Chris was born a year later. After the Navy he sold insurance, more than two million dollars' worth in his first year, one of his company's top fifty salesmen in the country.

They moved to a larger house, then in 1973 built a new one designed by an architect. By 1984 they had a pool, a boat, a Florida time share, a Cadillac convertible and the country club. Underneath, the money was running out. Rob gambled heavily at blackjack at Harrah's Marina in Atlantic City. He had forged Maria's signature on a $100,000 home equity loan and raised it to its $130,000 limit, borrowed repeatedly, and by his own later account owed about $200,000 besides the mortgage. She hired the private investigator Fred Grosso and told him the money was disappearing. Her lawyer, Michael Dewitt, prepared a divorce filing and a bankruptcy petition, ready in July 1984, but Maria held them back, hoping a family holiday would save the marriage.

Rob was having an affair with Soran Kraushar, vice principal of Pinelands Regional High School, since the summer of 1983. They had a beach house at Manahawkin, a joint bank account and a post office box for letters and tapes. He had also insured Maria heavily: two $100,000 policies through his own company, $500,000 with Banner Life in September 1983, $500,000 with Manhattan Life and $100,000 with Fireman's Fund in February 1984, and $100,000 with Minnesota Mutual in April, about $1.2 million of it after the affair began. On September 3rd, 1984, he asked the agent Philip Gerard for another $100,000 policy, demanding the paperwork and medical examination within forty-eight hours because the family was going on holiday. The examination was done at the house at two o'clock on September 6th.

That evening Rob and Maria drove to Atlantic City, had dinner and gambled at Harrah's, and left around midnight. Rob said he felt a vibration, passed the toll plaza and pulled into the Oyster Creek picnic area off the Garden State Parkway to check the tyre. He said a dark sedan stopped about thirty feet away, that he asked Maria to open the boot, and that he was struck on the head as he turned. When he came round, he said, Maria had been shot, and he ran to the parkway for help. More than $2,000 in casino cash was gone and her handbag was missing, though her gold necklace, bracelet and three rings were left. He was taken to hospital for five stitches.

Another motorist, John Heckler, had left Harrah's at about half past eleven and seen a Cadillac pass at speed with its high beams on; he recognised it and its occupants from the casino. Further on he saw it stopped in the picnic area, headlights off and tail lights on, and did not stop. At 2.15 a.m. Lieutenant Bob Gladstone of the Ocean County homicide department found Maria, forty-two, face down across the front seats, shot twice in the back at close range with a .45. The entrance wounds could be covered by a fifty-cent piece; one bullet exited through her chest, one through her left breast, and a third was lodged in her forearm. Her left lung and the main artery of her chest were lacerated and death was instant. The tyre had a clean cut and no sign of having been driven flat.

Gladstone was suspicious at once: the picnic area was unlit and closed after dark, the toll plaza was lit and busy, and a Roy Rogers restaurant was three miles on. By nine the next morning he had heard from Grosso, who said Maria's only cross word had ever been with Rob, and from Dewitt, who described the financial distress and the affair. At 3.30 that afternoon Soran Kraushar was interviewed. She confirmed the affair and said Rob had told her before Christmas 1983 that the insurance would cover his debts, that he wished Maria was not around and asked whether she knew anyone who could take care of it. She refused, she said, but gave him the name of a man with run-ins with the law.

Gerard then reported the rushed policy. Harrah's records showed twenty-five visits since January, ninety-three hours of blackjack, an average bet of $131 and $3,000 owed to the casino.

On September 27th Rob checked into room 16 of the Best Western in Lakewood, recorded farewell tapes for his sons and for his brother-in-law, the Wilmington attorney Jean Lahey, and took fifty Restoril pills in a can of Coke. He was found asleep, hospitalised and then moved to a psychiatric facility near Philadelphia.

Kraushar resigned, reconciled with her husband, opened Blockbuster video stores and moved to Florida.

Joe McGinniss published Blind Faith in 1989; it became a bestseller and a 1990 miniseries. Robby worked as a consultant on it, met Joanna Kerns, who played his mother, and in 1994 married her on-screen daughter Tracy Gold; they had four children and he taught in California. Chris graduated from Lehigh, coached swimming there and became Cornell's senior vice president of alumni affairs. In 2014, aged seventy-one and after twelve years, he admitted to a retired Ocean County prosecutor that he fired the two shots that killed Maria and that his wife, son and brother had lied to give him an alibi.
