The story

The episode goes to Ramsey, New Jersey, a town of about 14,801 people about an hour from New York City. James describes it as a quiet, expensive suburban town with a median home price of $623,800. Its history includes the Old Stone House, built from stone and hog's hair, and Peter J. Ramsey, the 1800s landowner after whom the town is named.

She later moved to Illinois and worked for a pharmaceutical company. She married Tony Brooks there; by 1995 her company had transferred her to Texas, and the couple moved to the Arlington area near Dallas. Brooks later said that when he returned from a golf outing in Memphis she was gone and he never saw her again.

Paul Duncsack was born in 1966 and built a successful career in pharmacy. He earned a pharmacy degree from Rutgers in 1989 and founded two successful pharmaceutical businesses. In 1999 he married Stacy, and the couple had a son in 2000 and a daughter in 2001. They bought a house at West Crescent Avenue in Ramsey in January 2003 for $780,000. The divorce was finalised in January 2005. Paul met Lori Adamo in 2005; they began dating in 2006 and planned a May 2007 wedding.

He lived with his girlfriend Doddy Sue in an RV on his daughter Evelyn's property in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

In August 2006 Paul was staying at Lori's house while she sold it, but he drove to his Ramsey house each evening to check his email and feed his parrot. On 23 August Lori and her coworker Helen toured the house at about 1.30 p.m. They noticed that it was warm, that a furnace door was closed and that a bathroom door was locked. Outside, Lori saw a Burger King Whopper wrapper in the rubbish. At about 6.20 p.m. Paul called Lori as he arrived home to feed the parrot. He mentioned the wrapper and the air conditioning, then shouted 'no, oh no'. Lori heard the parrot squawk and a loud thud, and the line went dead. She called the house, then 911.

Police broke in and found Paul dead on the floor in a pool of blood. He had been shot ten times with a .22-calibre weapon, none of the wounds at close range, and the shooter had used a silencer. There was no forced entry, but the French doors to the deck were unlocked and the locks had recently been picked. Police found no weapon, fingerprints or DNA.

He said he had left Florida on 20 August, paid in cash, slept in his car and left his phone at home. The investigation showed a different trail. On 13 August he and Doddy bought a burner phone at a Walmart in Wytheville, Virginia. He rented a Dodge Durango from Enterprise in Allentown, drove 500 miles in a day, returned it and took a replacement car, which he drove 1,000 miles. A neighbour saw a blue Ford Explorer in Paul's driveway about two hours before the murder.

Police searched the RV and Evelyn's house in Port St. Lucie. They found six computers, a .22-calibre handgun, ammunition and locks from French doors.

Doddy, she said, told her to say he arrived on Tuesday. Doctors testified about his sleep apnoea, asthma and diabetes, and his lawyer said he could not have run up the stairs, cleaned up the shell casings and driven 21 hours. The prosecution said he was a former Marine, highly skilled with weapons, and that the drive and the shooting were not athletic f. A police reconstruction drove the route in 21 hours and 34 minutes.

Paul's mother Sophia called Stacy a gold digger and said they killed him for the money; Lori said whatever justice could be served had been served.
