The story

Sunnyside, California, is a census-designated suburb of Fresno, in Fresno County, in the central valley, about three hours' drive from San Francisco and four from Los Angeles. James says some sources treat it as a Fresno neighbourhood and others as a separate suburb; in 1992 it had 4,468 residents, a median age a little over 41, and a reputation as a quieter, safer enclave than Fresno proper.

Glee Ellen Mitchell was born in Chicago on January 13, 1935. Her father was an instructor at the Chicago Squash Club and her mother's family had Oklahoma oil money. Glee went to the University of Arizona, won Phi Beta Kappa honours in inter-American studies, spoke fluent Spanish and worked for the CIA as an interpreter, spending two years in Argentina. In 1961, at a party outside Tucson, she met Dale Allen Ewell, who had been born in Ohio on October 11, 1932, studied aeronautical engineering at Miami University, served as an Air Force pilot and sold Cessna aircraft. They married on December 28, 1961, and the aircraft business brought them to Fresno, where Dale ran Western Piper Sales, owned two farms of figs and pistachios in Merced County and earned a reputation as the most hated aircraft dealer in the world.

Their daughter Tiffany Ann Ewell was born on May 1, 1967. A car accident in childhood left her with a steel plate in her skull, and her family thought it made her quiet and slow; her father called her his imperfect angel. She was voted the shyest person in the class of 1985 at San Joaquin Memorial, went to Linfield College in Oregon and returned to study accounting at California State University at Fresno. At Santa Clara University he told lies about running a multi-million dollar company, and in 1990 the campus newspaper and the San Jose Mercury News printed profiles of him as a teenage millionaire, all of it invented. His parents responded by structuring the estate so that he would receive money in stages, and Dale planned to stop supporting him after graduation.

At Easter 1992 the family gathered at their beach house near Watsonville. Dale flew back to Fresno, arriving before 3.30 p.m., and called his office manager Marlene Reed around four. On Tuesday, April 21, after Marlene pressed him, he asked a neighbour to check the house. The neighbour arrived shortly after nine as the maid and her crew were letting themselves in. They found Tiffany face down in the kitchen, shot once in the back of the head; Dale face down in the hallway, shot once in the back of the neck; and Glee in the office, partly on her back, shot four times. Rigor mortis and lividity had set in. Every room had been ransacked, but there were no signs of forced entry, the alarm was off, and the burglary looked staged. The gun was a 9mm, no shell casings were found, and Dale's 9mm Browning pistol and a box of ammunition were missing from the master bedroom.

He was the sole heir to an estate worth $7,974,500, he received $317,888.47 in bank accounts and insurance in early May, he was made vice president of Western Piper at $2,000 a week, and he asked his uncle what the will said about the money. A detective who walked him through the house said, 'That kid's dirty.' A firearms expert, Alan Boudreau, later matched all six bullets to that rifle and to a homemade silencer made from PVC pipe, tennis balls and steel wool.

The police built a case with telephone records, a cloned pager and months of surveillance.

The Ewells are buried at Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno. The murder house was listed for $559,000 in 2023 and sold for $480,000.
