Stephanie Lynn Pruitt was born on June 29th, 1974. By the mid-nineties she was a single mother of three in her early twenties, living in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, working and raising her children. She was known as a kind woman who loved gardening and kept angels around her house.
Stephanie's co-worker and boyfriend was Michael Houston Sanders, born on December 1st, 1968, from Granite City, Illinois. Later that same evening he came back, found Stephanie alone, cut her jaw with a knife and punched her in the face. She called the police. Stephanie stopped going back to the trailer and moved in with Michael full time.
He drove from the Troy area to Cape Girardeau County, followed Stephanie from work and around her errands, and found where she was living. That evening he waited outside Michael Sanders' trailer, then knocked on the door. The children ran and hid in a toy box in a closet. He handcuffed her, dragged her out of the trailer as the children screamed, put her in the car and drove away.
He played Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory over and over. At about 10.30 or 11 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol spotted the car south of St. Louis and gave chase. The car rear-ended a patrol car near U.S. Highway 40, in the Festus and Crystal City area, and a shootout followed. Both survived.
He said he thought Stephanie was the one and that she had broken his heart. About a week after the murder he made his first court appearance in a wheelchair, was declared indigent and was given a public defender.
He had deliberately lost weight, down to about ninety pounds, and a trustee, William Douglas Roth, carried him out in a trash bag and threw the bag into a dumpster outside the secure area. He climbed out and fled. A large manhunt followed, with a helicopter and bloodhounds along Hubble Creek, but it was called off within days. On June 19th, 1996, he went to Barbara Pruitt's house on East Cape Rock Drive, where he believed Stephanie was staying, and hid in the pantry. When Barbara came to lock the back door he hit her with something metal; her boyfriend Ed Frenzel fought him, and Barbara escaped and raised the alarm. He surrendered at gunpoint near County Road 263.
The judge admitted a child's crayon drawing stained with Michael Sanders' blood, saying gruesome crimes produce gruesome evidence. In the penalty phase his mother and the mother of his son testified for him, while the state called him a homicidal and bloodthirsty energizer bunny.
In April 2019 it ruled five to four against his claim that lethal injection would make him choke on his own blood, and a final clemency request to Governor Mike Parson failed. The neighbour ran behind the trailer and heard a brief exchange, a gunshot and a car driving away. Stephanie had been shot in the chest with a .30-30 rifle and died at the scene. Stephanie's children, who were between eleven and sixteen, were inside the home and were not injured. Michael Sanders' son Zachary enlisted in the army in 2010 and said he did not want to be defined by what had happened to his father.
