These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Fayette sits in Kennebec County with nine sizable ponds and lakes, among them a 1,610-acre pond and a 1,185-acre lake, and a population the hosts put at 1,274. It started as a Starling plantation covering 7,000 acres in 1779, under a name nobody quite settled on, and took its own from a French nobleman who offered his services during the Revolution.
The Fayette area's three murders arrive in two episodes. Episode 696 carries two of them, both from the 1980s and both in Fayette itself, at the dead centre of the hotspot. Episode 612 goes out to Litchfield, 19 miles away, for one case from April 2018. So no single episode hoards the count: two episodes, two towns, and more than three decades between the first case and the last.
Rank 100 overall, third in Maine. For a town of 1,274 with nine ponds to its name, that is a modest sort of notoriety.
