The story

He had been born in Huntsville, Alabama, on 9 April 1989, the second child of Joe Dolphus Pittman and Hazel Pittman, who had met in high school. Joe Dolphus, an army demolitions soldier, moved the children around before settling them for a time with Joe Frank and Joy in Oxford, Florida. In August 2001 Hazel reappeared, but about a month later she told the children at her door that they could not see her again. He was prescribed Paxil, then given Zoloft samples because Paxil was not available in Chester. His father sent him to live with Joe Frank and Joy, where he seemed at first to settle in.

The trouble at school began on 27 November 2001. The boy's parents reported it the next day, and the school called Joe Frank and Joy. At home the grandparents locked him in his room. He came out about ten o'clock for a drink, and Joe Frank paddled him five or six times with a paddle and sent him back. He collected the spent casings, placed candles with paper around them, took guns, ammunition, his dog Christy and a half-full petrol can, and drove off in the Pathfinder with about thirty-three dollars and some rolled coins from his grandmother's purse.

At 11.52pm the fire was called in to Station 12. Volunteer firefighters found the house engulfed, the porches burned away and the motor home alight. Joy's car was missing, so at first they hoped the couple were away. They brought the fire under control in about forty-five minutes, then searched for property to salvage. In a five-foot gun safe they found twenty-seven guns; because the safe was already open and they did not yet know anyone had died, they carried the guns out. In the remains of the loft, firefighter Andy Martin raked the ashes with a pole and uncovered a human stomach. Two charred adult bodies were recovered, later lifted out with a crane and laid on a tarp. Joe Frank lay face up on the bed, his legs over the side; Joy lay face down on the other side with a gaping hole in the back of her head. Both had blood on them, which the investigators found suspicious, and shotgun shells lay near the wood shed. The fire chief, James 'Red' Wear, said the utility shed was never left unlocked. Investigators concluded the fire had been set deliberately in the loft and had burned upwards before spreading down.

Earlier that morning, two hunters, Pennington and Terry Robinson, had driven to their hunting club two counties away. Robinson saw a black Pathfinder parked on the logging road. While Pennington sat in his deer stand, a small boy in hunting clothes came towards him calling for help. He was carrying a loaded .45 lever-action rifle, and Pennington talked him into handing it over. He said he had thrown the keys into the woods.

A manhunt with helicopters, bloodhounds and search teams found no trace of any other man. In the Pathfinder the driver's seat was pulled all the way forward, the gear shift was in reverse and a five-gallon petrol can was half full. He described waiting until his grandparents were asleep, shooting four times, collecting the casings, lighting candles and putting paper around them, taking the guns and driving away. He said he had made up the black man because he was afraid of being sent back to his father. Asked whether he was sorry, he said he was not: they deserved it because they had hit him with the paddle.

His defence was involuntary intoxication, arguing that Zoloft had caused hallucinations and aggression. Pfizer denied that the drug caused delusions or violence, and the prosecution called the defence a smoke screen. The judge imposed thirty years on each count, concurrent, the minimum the law allowed. He was held at Allendale Correctional Institution with a projected release date of 22 February 2023.
