Eureka, Utah, is a former silver and gold mining town of about 596 people in Juab County, a little over an hour from Salt Lake City. It was originally called Ruby Hollow, was incorporated in 1892 and became the financial centre of the Tintic mining district. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, and its best known native is Frank Zamboni.
His father was absent and his mother was an alcoholic teenager, and he was adopted and raised by his grandparents, Billy and Maxine. He was never manageable. He failed every grade at school, fought with other children and drew guns constantly. In October 1991, on his fifteenth birthday, he walked away from an appointment with his probation therapist and began a three-day crime spree, stealing cars and guns, burgling houses and robbing a Burger King in Orem at gunpoint. He fired at the staff from the window of a stolen pickup as he drove away.
The couple had been visiting Otteson's family in Tooele and stopped in Spanish Fork on the way home to Eureka. He then taped the teenagers' hands, feet and mouths, put them in the back of a Jeep and drove them to the Tintic Standard mine.
Otteson begged to be untied and said she was pregnant, which she was not.
The couple were reported missing on 2 January 2018. Powell's pickup was found on 11 January, a mile south of Cherry Creek Reservoir, covered with trees and with two slashed tyres. On 25 March 2018 she was stopped for speeding with drugs and a weapon in the car, on her way to kill herself. Both had their hands tied behind their backs and stab wounds.
Prosecutors sought death but withdrew it. He told the court he was not a monster; the judge told him that he was the most violent, selfish and senseless offender he had ever dealt with, and that he might fuck off.
