The story

Beach City, Ohio, is a farming community of 681 people in Stark County in the north-east of the state, about an hour and ten minutes from Cleveland. Timothy Stockdale was born in Michigan in 1960 and met Catherine Miller, known as Kathy, at Ohio State University, where both studied agriculture and agronomy. Kathy was born in 1962 and grew up in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The family moved from a conventional neighbourhood to a farm outside Beach City, saying they wanted to escape what they called the sins of the city. Kathy homeschooled the boys and ran the household with strict rules: no television, no video games, no dating, no sweets, no processed food and no secular music. Chores were rewarded with tokens that could be exchanged for small privileges. In 2008 the family appeared on the ABC reality programme Wife Swap, series four, episode fifteen, matched with the Tonkovic family from Illinois, a household with no rules at all. Kathy was presented as the overprotective mother. By 2017 the two Calvins had left home: the elder was working at Hillsdale College in Michigan and the younger was studying to be a doctor in Philadelphia. Charles had also moved out. James was studying business management at Kent State University.

On 15 June 2017 Tim was away on a business trip. Between one and three in the afternoon neighbours heard between ten and twelve shotgun shots. Harry McNutt Jr, who lived next door, described a rapid burst of shots, a pause to reload and then another five or six, and assumed it was target practice. At 4.36 p.m. the Stark County sheriff's office received a 911 call from the farm's landline; it was a hang-up call, and when dispatchers called back nobody answered. Deputies were sent to the farm. At the front door, which was standing ajar, an officer saw a man lying on his back with his head towards the door. As he was about to ask whether the man was all right he heard a single shotgun blast from inside the house. The deputies ran for cover and called for backup.

When they went in they found James Stockdale just inside the front door, killed by multiple wounds from a 20-gauge shotgun. Kathy Stockdale was dead on the floor of the upstairs bathroom, also shot. He had shot his mother and his brother, called 911 and hung up so that the police would come, waited until they were at the house and then shot himself. The last shot the officers heard was the one he fired at himself, which is why there was never much doubt about what had happened. He was taken to Cleveland Hospital in a critical condition and survived the attempt on his own life.

Tim Stockdale could not be reached at first. The band had bookings for the whole summer. Neighbours and people who had seen the family perform were shocked. They said they loved him and forgave him. She said he had more chores than anyone else and was easygoing, so he was given more work.

A psychologist, Archangela Wood of the Psychodiagnostic Clinic in Akron, concluded that he had not been suffering from a severe mental disease at the time. The family's forgiveness and the absence of any clear motive left the case unexplained: as the episode puts it, the question of why remained open.
