The story

Her father, John Hedberg, was in the army, and the family moved to Fort Riley, Kansas, then settled west of Topeka. She learned to read at four and was reading on her own at five, but the home was violent. Judy beat her with belts, brooms and cords, made her eat raw onions, locked her naked outside in winter and killed the family dog with a shovel in front of her. When Judy married Jack Kleiner, a single father with five children, the family moved to Oklahoma. Judy knew.

In 1986 Judy married Richard Bowman, whose son Carl came home from the navy. She finished high school planning to join the Air Force for college money, then found she was pregnant. They married in Cleveland, Oklahoma, in August 1986, and she had four children between the ages of eighteen and twenty-three: Desiree, born in January 1987, then Chelsea, Carl junior and Kayla. Her tubes were tied during emergency surgery at the last birth, apparently without her consent. She divorced Carl in 1993, remarried him in 1994, and claimed pregnancies that did not exist. In 2000 she told him she was pregnant and then said she had gone to New Mexico for an abortion. In 2002 she claimed a stillbirth at a birthing centre. She had moved sixty-one times in thirty-four years and carried diagnoses of depression, borderline personality disorder, PTSD and organic brain damage.

Bobby Joe Potter was born in Maryville, Missouri, on December 4th, 1981, and grew up in Skidmore. Her parents were Becky Harper and Joseph Buck Potter, who left the family when she was small. She was born with a cleft palate, corrected at two, and was shy until high school, where she became an honour student and a cheerleader. She graduated from Nodaway-Holt High School in Graham, Missouri, in 2000, worked at a feed store and then at the Kawasaki factory in Maryville, where she met Zeb Stanet, a childhood friend. They married in April 2003. She bred rat terriers at Happy Haven Farms from her home, was strict about who bought her puppies and was well thought of on the Ratter Chatter forum. In 2004 she was eight months pregnant, expecting a girl on January 16th, 2005, and had already chosen the name Victoria Joe.

After that they spoke online for months. She told the rat terrier community she was expecting twins, then announced in October that she had lost one. On December 8th she posted that the baby could come any day. On December 15th Darlene Fisher asked to visit and buy a puppy as a Christmas gift, and Bobby Joe agreed to see her the next day.

On December 16th, 2004, Zeb kissed Bobby Joe goodbye at 6.30 a.m. and drove to Kawasaki Motors in Maryville. She left at ten for the 175-mile drive to Skidmore. Her dirty red Toyota Corolla with Kansas plates pulled up outside West Elm Street at 12.30 p.m., parked the wrong way. They looked at puppies and talked about bloodlines and Christmas. At 2.30 Becky Harper telephoned about the 3.30 pickup, and Bobby Joe told her she had a customer looking at puppies but would be there.

She lowered her to the floor, fetched a paring knife from the kitchen and cut across her abdomen. At 2.50 she wrapped the baby in blankets she had brought, clamped the cord with medical supplies and at 2.55 carried her out of the front door. At three o'clock the Corolla turned round at the dead end and drove away.

Becky Harper arrived at 3.30, found the house neat until she reached the dog room, and saw her daughter on the floor in pools of blood. She called 911 and was talked through CPR for eleven minutes. Sheriff Ben Espey, thirty minutes away, arrived at 3.52. Bobby Joe had defensive wounds, blond hairs in her fists and a cut umbilical cord. The medical examiner later found she died of strangulation before the baby was cut out. He telephoned a congressman, and agencies began to converge on the house.

At six in the evening investigators found the home computer and the correspondence with Darlene Fisher. The neighbour Chris Law reported the dirty red Toyota with Kansas plates parked the wrong way. At nine the FBI was dispatched to Melvern, and at 11.45 p.m. the first Amber Alert for an unseen child was issued.

He arrived at six, and they were home by seven. The next morning she took the baby to Pastor Mike Wheatley for a blessing, then to the Whistle Stop Cafe, where the owner Kathy scolded her for bringing a newborn out, then to the county clerk's office and to Carl's house, where Carl's wife Vanessa asked Kevin whether the baby was really his.

At 5.30 p.m. on December 17th FBI agent Mickey Roberts and detective Randy Strong knocked on the door. At 7.45 the baby was taken into protective custody and hospital, thirty-six weeks old, five pounds eleven ounces, with a small cut above one eye and otherwise healthy. DNA confirmed she was Bobby Joe and Zeb's daughter. On December 19th Zeb held her and named her Victoria Jo.

Bobby Joe was buried after a closed-casket funeral on December 22nd at Hillcrest cemetery in Skidmore, with a photograph of her pregnant and smiling on the casket.

Zeb, Kevin, Kevin's ex-wife Lori, Kevin's parents Joy and Roger, Carl junior and Desiree all testified. The judge found the aggravating factors substantially outweighed the mitigating ones.

A new date of January 12th, 2021 was set, stays were granted and vacated through the day, and at ten that night the Supreme Court vacated all stays. She was moved to Terre Haute, given a sack lunch, asked for last words and said no.

Victoria Jo was raised by her father with help from the extended family, kept out of the public eye, and was nineteen and doing well at the time of the episode. The murder house at West Elm Street has never been lived in again and is falling apart. Skidmore, now under 250 people, keeps shrinking and calls itself cursed.
