The story

Poteau, the seat of LeFlore County in eastern Oklahoma, sits about three hours from Oklahoma City and four from Dallas. His mother, Betty Lambert, was a sixteen-year-old from the Arkansas backwoods; his father, John Henry Edwards, was twenty-one and worked as a railroad switchman before training as a pilot at the Spartan Aviation school in Tulsa. They married on November 9th, 1950. The marriage was violent and unhappy. Betty was an alcoholic, and John eventually left, abandoning the children to her care. A school evaluation sent him to the children's medical centre in Tulsa when he was thirteen, where he was diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder and poor impulse control. He later said the three months he spent there were the happiest of his life because no one beat or molested him, but his parents insisted on taking him home. He ran away repeatedly, stole a car and was sent to juvenile detention and then to Eastern State Hospital. At seventeen he joined the army and was given a general discharge because of mental problems. By nineteen he had been hospitalised eight times, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and had received more than twenty electroconvulsive treatments. He took Cash's 1976 Dodge van and his shoes, sold the van at a salvage yard outside Summerfield and hitchhiked to Poteau. There he checked into a cheap motel, went to Henry's Bar and met Margaret Ann Bell Liddick, a thirty-seven-year-old radio presenter known on KLCO in Poteau as Sabrina. She offered him a ride in her white Cadillac. Once they were in the car he produced a knife and forced her to drive through Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky, raping her at stops along the way. He eventually strangled her, kept her body in the car for nearly a week, abandoned the Cadillac when it broke down in Branson, Missouri, and hid her body in a haystack near an abandoned barn off Kentucky 139, three miles from Princeton. On May 14th he called at the home of Jane K. Hilburn near Vinita, posing as a man interested in the house she was selling. In the hallway between the bedrooms he attacked her, strangled her with a lamp cord and took her 1987 Camaro. Her six-year-old daughter found the body after school. On May 23rd Janet D. Jewell, a thirty-two-year-old mother of three from Beggs, ran out of petrol in downtown Tulsa while looking for work. He took the Dart to the Town West shopping centre, where on May 24th he abducted Valerie Shaw Hartsell, a twenty-five-year-old reporter and newscaster for KRAV in Tulsa, as she shopped for nappies. He kept her overnight at a Kellyville oil lease, forced her to cash cheques for $500, then drove her to western Rogers County on May 25th, made her tear a towel into strips, strangled her and left her in a ravine. The FBI joined the case on May 31st. On June 1st he took Pauline Mullian and her daughter Lori Smallwood hostage in their trailer near Figure Five, Arkansas, and forced them to drive him to Tulsa before releasing them. More than thirty relatives of his victims watched. He apologised several times in a two-minute final statement and said he hoped the families would let their hatred go with him.
