Casey Anthony's hallway

What does "Casey Anthony's hallway" mean on Small Town Murder?

A lie, or a way of living, with an obvious dead end that can't be talked past. Named after Casey Anthony leading police down a hallway at Universal Studios to an office she didn't have, until she reached the wall at the end, turned round and admitted she didn't work there. James uses it for anyone heading towards that wall, like an embezzler living above his means.

The story behind the phrase

Where did "Casey Anthony's hallway" come from?

It first appears in episode 721, as James sums up an embezzler who is living above his means, with debts on a car, store cards and a boat, and keeps writing cheques to stay afloat. "It's Casey Anthony's hallway, is what it is," he says, and he and Jimmie then explain the term.

The hosts use it for a lie or a way of living with an obvious dead end. As James tells it, Casey Anthony told police she worked at Universal Studios and walked them down a hallway towards her office, then stopped at the end, turned round and admitted she did not work there. Once you run out of offices that aren't yours, the lie is over.

How is "Casey Anthony's hallway" used now?

James uses it again in episode 733 for a student who funds a rich persona with credit cards and theft. He says there is an end to that hallway where you run out of office doors that could be yours and hit a wall.

The real Universal Studios hallway

In July 2008 police in Orange County, Florida were looking for two-year-old Caylee Anthony, reported missing by her grandmother on 15 July after she had not been seen for a month. Caylee's mother, Casey Anthony, told detectives she worked at Universal Studios in Orlando.

On 16 July 2008 detectives took her there to see her office. According to the lead detective's evidence at her trial, she took them into the building and about halfway down a hallway, then stopped, turned round and said, "I don't work here." She had not worked at Universal since 2006.

In 2011 a jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of murdering her daughter. She was convicted of giving false information to police, and two of those four convictions were overturned on appeal in 2013. That walk, a lie that runs out of road in front of the very people it was told to, is what James's phrase is named after.
